The Liberal Democrats have a proud record in Montgomeryshire, Powys, of representing local people on our local councils, on the National Assembly in Wales and at the Westminster Parliament.

Lembit Öpik has been the Member of Parliament for Montgomeryshire since 1997 (succeeding Alex Carlile), with Mick Bates being elected to the Welsh Assembly for Montgomeryshire at their first election in 1999.

Montgomeryshire's Welsh Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Öpik has today called for a rethink on plans to flood a significant area of Llandrinio to divert water away from other areas, after the Secretary of State agreed to meet with him and local residents to discuss the proposals.

Local AM makes final bid to save Welshpool Tax Office New!

Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates makes a final bid to save Welshpool Tax Office, submitting his views on the proposals by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC). These form part of the Government's drive to undertake a nationwide programme of reviews of its office network, which may lead to around 25,000 jobs being axed and over 200 Revenue and Customs offices being closed across the UK.

As the Bank of England released figures showing that the number of mortgage approvals UK wide had fallen to its lowest level since it started publishing such figures in 1993, Lembit Öpik, Liberal Democrat Housing Spokesperson and MP for Montgomeryshire, warned that Wales was at the sharp end of the rising numbers of household repossessions.

Newtown bids to become exemplar for sustainable travel under Assembly Government Sustainable Towns Initiative

In the midst of National Bike Week 2008, Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates is taking action to put Newtown on the map as an exemplar of sustainable transport, by proposing the town as a demonstration town under the Assembly Government's 'Sustainable Towns Initiative', which aims to enhance opportunities for walking and cycling, improved public transport and better travel planning.
