Money-Raiser Helps Fund Life-Savers - Öpik9.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 8th Aug 2006
A fundraiser was held at Clywedog Sailing Club last week to raise money for Wales' waterborne lifesavers, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Local Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Öpik opened the event, before taking to the water to try his hand at sailing and wind surfing on the dam. Commenting afterwards, Lembit said: "The RNLI put their lives on the line to save people at risk. They go out in the most terrible weather to help people who are literally out of their depth at sea. "Clywedog Sailing Club's fundraising sailing day is testimony to the club's commitment to the RNLI and their work. It was fun day out to raise money for a very important cause. "So thank you to the club, thank you to the RNLI and thank you to everyone who continues to fund a seaborne emergency service that is always there for those in peril on the sea." The event raised more than £500 to go towards training lifeboat crews. Crew members from the Aberystwyth lifeboat station came along to support the event, bringing their Crew kit so visitors could see how waterproof it is also the weight.
