"The Lib Dems are setting the political agenda for Wales and Britain."

Ahead of their conference next week, senior Welsh Liberal Democrats have said that their party is "setting the political agenda" for Wales and Britain on key issues from the environment to economic inequality.

Lembit Öpik, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, said today:

"This is a big conference for the Lib Dems with the Welsh and Scottish elections coming up next year. We are the party of ideas, interested in substance, not spin. Over the next five days we'll be having an open and democratic debate about the core issues affecting the country.

"We want to see a fairer, greener Britain, and at Conference we'll be discussing radical policies to achieve this aim by combating climate change, overhauling our outdated tax system, and improving public services.

"In all these key areas, the Lib Dems are setting the political agenda for Wales and Britain."

Mike German, Assembly Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, said:

"Welsh Liberal Democrats are in great spirits. We are starting the run in to the first Welsh General Election where increasing our numbers of seats will be goal. Our vote has increased at every election since 1999, and we'll be working hard to make sure it does so again.

"We want to deliver a programme which will make life for the people of Wales fairer and greener. A 'can do' programme from a 'can do' party. We're working hard on that programme at the moment and people can be assured that the more Welsh Liberal Democrat AMs they vote for next May, the more of our programme we'll be able to deliver."
