At the General Election in Montgomeryshire on 5th May 2005, 30097 votes were cast (approximately 64% of the total number of eligible voters) with the following result:

Lembit Opik (Liberal Democrat): 15419 votes (+1.8%).

27.4%

Simon Baynes (Conservative): 8246 votes (-0.5%).

11.5%

David Tinline (Labour): 3454 votes (-0.4%).

6.9%

Ellen ap Gwynn (Plaid Cymru): 2078 votes (+0.1%).

Clive Easton (UK Independence Party): 900 votes (+0.3%).
